My book is finished, where do I start?First, read the Glossary to familiarize yourself with important industry terms that you will need to know as you begin to manufacture your book.
Though
editing your text and designing your cover may seem like the next step, in fact, it can be useful to find what printer or
company you'll be using before you fully format your document. Mostly, this is because different printers have their own
unique printing specifications based on the equipment they use, allowing variations in margin spacing, trim size, and bleed
size.
These reasons also apply:
1.) Some self publishing companies give you a discount on their editorial
and copyediting services if you commit to printing with them.
2.) Many companies offer interior layout and custom cover
design opportunities, or, at the very least, provide templates for you to download if you wish to do it yourself.
3.)
If your book is fully edited and you have the perfect cover in mind, you might choose to go direct to a printer. Even in this
case, a printer will usually offer an optional conversion service for your documents, turning your Word document into a PDF
for example.
4.) If you can't afford your own ISBN, many companies and printers will assign one of their own to
you, usually for free. However, if possible, it is always recommended to purchase your own ISBN from RR Bowker, the only US ISBN Agency, or from an authorized RR Bowker single ISBN vendor, as the owner of the ISBN cannot be changed and will forever be listed as the publisher of your book.
