The part of an image that extends beyond the trim size of a page.

CMYK
Colors sphere of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black used in printing to create full-color
prints.
Copy Edit
Editing
of a book that checks for grammar, spelling, punctuation and other mistakes.
Copyright
Legal protection given to intellectual property.
Digital Printing
A type of computer file printing
usually used to print books in a small quantity.
DPI
Dots per inch. A measure of image quality (resolution) in pixels. Most printers require a 300 dpi minimum on all images.
E-Book
An electronic version of a book.
Exclusive Copyright
Rights over an intellectual property granted exclusively to an individual
or entity and may not be issued to any other individual or entity.
Full-Color
Printing using CMYK.
Grayscale
An image that is in various shades of black and white.
ISBN
International Standards Book Number. An international

LCCN
Library
of Congress Control Number. A number requested from the Library of Congress so that a book may be listed in their catalog.
Required to have the book listed in libraries.
List Price
The suggested retail price assigned to a book.
Long Run Printing
A term
used to describe a large quantity of books being printed, usually over 500 copies.
Manuscript
The book in typewritten or word processing
form.
Non-Exclusive Copyright
Rights
over an intellectual property granted to an individual or entity but may be dually issued to another individual or entity.
Offset Printing
A type of machine printing usually used to print a large quantity of
books.
PDF
Portable Document Format. A universal file format that preserves the fonts, images,
graphics and layout from a source document, regardless of the application and platform used to create it.
Perfect Bound
Paperback books.
Press Release
A written article relaying news, usually sent to newspapers and magazines. Can be used to inform the public about your book.
Print-on-Demand (POD)
Type of printing where books are printed one at a time, usually
when ordered by a customer or retailer.
Resolution
The quality or sharpness of an
image, usually defined by dpi.
Retailer
A company
that sells manufactured goods usually bought at wholesale price.
RGB
Colors
sphere of red, green, and blue used in most printing.
Royalty
The payment an author
receives from a publisher of a certain percentage of sales of their book.
R.R. Bowker
The only agency in the United States authorized to issue ISBN's.
Short
Run Printing

Template
A pre-set format or design for files.
Trim
Size
The width and height of a book after it has been printed, cut, and bound.
Wholesaler
A distribution company that allows
bookstores and libraries to order multiple titles from multiple publishers.
W-9
A tax form used to request a social security number
for tax reporting purposes, usually used by companies that issue royalties.
